Just as war is the last breakdown of the diplomatic process, kidnapping is the last breakdown of improper security processes.
Daniel Risk Mitigation was established by the former Coordinator of the Hostage Working Group (HWG) in Iraq. The founder directly managed the inter-agency coordination of more than 300 kidnapping incidents that included the release of an American journalist held captive for 9 days and an Irish journalist held hostage for 36 hours. Between July 2004 and April 2006, he was directly involved in every major international kidnapping incident including Care International aid worker, Margaret Hassan, Italian journalist Guiliana Sgrena, rescued hostages, American Roy Hallums, Australian Doug Woods, the Christian Peacemaker Team and Christian Science Monitor journalist, Jill Carroll. He arrived at the height of the hostage taking campaign targeting foreigners that averaged more than 40 per month; by the end of his service, foreign kidnappings in Iraq were in single digits with only 1 foreigner reported taken in each of the last two months of his tour. HWG spearheaded a training campaign to the journalists, contactors, and NGO workers operating in Iraq to heightened awareness on the kidnapping threat and how to avoid it. This preventive approach was one of the key factors reducing the number kidnappings in Iraq. With the success of his field training efforts to protect media and non-governmental organizations working in Iraq, he decided to take these skills and lessons learned to a wider audience.
