Hostage Working Group US Embassy – Baghdad

The U.S. Embassy, Baghdad - Hostage Working Group (HWG) was established in July 2004. The mission of the U.S. Embassy Hostage Working Group is to facilitate the recovery of hostages. Its role is to advise and make recommendations on actions to deter, prevent, and respond to hostage-taking incidents involving personal assigned to the US Ambassador, US citizens in country, military forces under Commander Multi-National Forces-Iraq (MNF-I) and all foreigners in country.

The priorities of HWG are three fold:
    1) RECOVERY – Safe release of hostages
    2) PREVENTION – Prevent future incidents through training
    3) JUSTICE – Bring hostage takers to justice
The HWG is a force multiplier that integrates all elements of national and regional power, diplomacy, intelligence, law enforcement, and military forces to bear as hostage situations develop in the Iraqi theater of operations.
